Wonder

Blog Post Wonder night sky, northern lights

It’s the season of wonder, childlike wonder. But if you’re like me, your childlike wonder has been lost in the midst of adult real-life stressors. It’s a given that we will lose sight of the simple things in life from time to time, but once we realize we’ve lost our connection, it’s time to reconnect. What better time than Christmas to renew our childlike wonder.

Psalm 19:1-14 is perfect for revealing the grandeur and yet the intimacy with which God displays His mighty works. In this scripture, we are reminded of the magnitude of who God is. Everything in existence honors the Creator.

We communicate verbally and non-verbally. We don’t need words to perceive the speech that the heavens and skies proclaim. We get a front row seat to witness the glory and what it looks like for God’s creation to proclaim the work of His hands. The day sky is an ever-changing canvas, and the night sky guides ships, shepherds, and vagabonds alike.

Psalm 19:1-14

The heavens declare the glory of God;

    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Day after day they pour forth speech;
    night after night they reveal knowledge.

They have no speech, they use no words;
    no sound is heard from them.

Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
    their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.

    It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
  like a champion rejoicing to run his course.

It rises at one end of the heavens
    and makes its circuit to the other;
    nothing is deprived of its warmth.

The law of the Lord is perfect,
    refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
    making wise the simple.

The precepts of the Lord are right,
    giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
    giving light to the eyes.

The fear of the Lord is pure,
    enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
    and all of them are righteous.

They are more precious than gold,
    than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,
    than honey from the honeycomb.

By them your servant is warned;
    in keeping them there is great reward.

But who can discern their own errors?
    Forgive my hidden faults.

Keep your servant also from willful sins;
    may they not rule over me.
Then I will be blameless,
    innocent of great transgression.

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
    be pleasing in your sight,
    Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

The sheer scale of the heavens will put you in a state of wonder not to mention the detail with which God knows the vastness. In Isaiah 40:26, speaking of the stars, the Word tells us that, “He calls them all by name. Not one of them is missing.” He knows them, where they are placed in the sky, and He is able to account for every. Single. One of them.

Astronomers who spend a lifetime studying the heavens are some of the most intelligent people and yet, if they’re honest, they’ll admit that there is far more we do not know versus what we do know about the heavens.

In a continual revelation 24 hours a day, the message of God’s glory is displayed throughout the earth. Even nonbelievers can perceive the message delivered by nature. In Acts 14:15, Paul tells the people of Lystra, “…turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them.”

Eternity might just be enough to gain some ground on grasping the greatness of the heavens and what they tell us about God. One glance to the heavens and we come face to face with the power, authority, and sovereignty that created it all.

God is always speaking, drawing, calling us to spend time with Him, to enjoy Him, to know Him. Let the wonder of this magnificent Creator lead you to awe because all He wants is to spend time with you.

Self-reflection

These questions are in no way a substitute for healthcare professionals or any level of professional counseling. I’m an advocate for taking care of oneself mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. These questions reflect my heart, NOT my profession.

This questionnaire is an opportunity to journal your thoughts and feelings. It can serve as a launching pad on which to evaluate your heart condition as you understand it. My hope is that you will take the truths you discover about yourself and hold them up to the Light to evaluate them against who God says you are.

  • What do the heavens reveal about God to you?
  • What stirs the wonder of God for you?
  • What leaves you in awe of God?
  • What are you thankful to God for?
  • How do you spend quiet time with God?
  • What is something you enjoy doing with God?

Take Action

Use God’s Word to take control over the traumas in your life.  Whenever you feel terrorized by your thoughts take them captive by replacing them with the truth of God’s promises in His Word.

Here is a scripture for you to print, cut and carry with you and/or post in places where you will see it often. Ground yourself in God’s truths not Satan’s attacks. Encourage your heart and mind every time you are reminded of His great love for YOU!

Here is what God’s Word says about His unfailing, relentless, unending love for you: Psalm 19:1-14

Translation: WoW! Just WoW!  God needs no human words to convey who He is. He reveals Himself in His creation. The heavens reveal to every living being who God is.
